    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Human dignity, as a biblical doctrine, should shape how Christians view the unborn, elderly and refugees as well as religious liberty, sexual assault and civil discourse, Southern Baptist ethics leaders told a gathering on Capitol Hill.

  • Jerry Brown veto sparks pro-life gratitude, relief

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. (BP) -- Pro-lifers in California and across the country are celebrating a surprising win delivered by the state's pro-abortion rights governor, Jerry Brown.

    Brown vetoed a bill Sept. 30 that would have required the state's public universities to provide abortion drugs for students by Jan. 1, 2022. A longtime supporter of abortion rights, the governor said in his veto message that the legislation is unnecessary because such abortion services "are widely available off-campus."

    "What a refreshing thing, to see someone do the right thing, even if it means siding against one's tribe," Southern Baptist ethicist Russell Moore said. "Governor Brown and I disagree on some important things -- the right to life for unborn children being one of them. But I am thankful indeed to see him veto this measure that would put abortion-inducing drugs on campuses across the state of California. Read More

  • Federal court protects liberty, life in Texas case

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- A federal appeals court ruling that protects a church's internal communications buttressed both religious freedom and defense of the unborn, according to the Southern Baptist Convention's church-state entity.

    The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans reversed July 15 a federal judge's order requiring the Roman Catholic bishops and archbishops of Texas to turn over their private deliberations on what they describe as doctrinal and moral issues.

    Though the case involved the Catholic Church, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) had said in a friend-of-the-court brief a failure to vacate the order would also endanger the religious freedom of Southern Baptist and other congregationally governed churches. Read More

  • Utah adopts informed consent law for medication abortions

    SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (BP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed legislation in late March that pro-life leaders hope will eventually help promote medically induced abortion reversals.

    The new law requires abortionists to inform women of "the options and consequences" of stopping a medication-induced abortion and will change state-printed information on abortion to tell women that mifepristone, the first of two drugs taken to end pregnancy, doesn't always work. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Churches must be intentional in protecting the lives of the unborn and caring for the most vulnerable among us, leaders across the Southern Baptist Convention said as the SBC prepares to observe Sanctity of Human Life Sunday Jan. 22.

    CEDARVILLE, Ohio (BP) -- Melinda Pinkerton was on the cross-country track team when her coach noticed the 14-year-old's ankles turned inward when she ran. She recalls the date, Nov. 18, 2002 when her parents received the results of her MRI.
